Hosting  Glossary

Web space
The amount of space on our servers which is measured in Megabytes (MB). The more megabytes you have, the more pages, images and data you are able to include on your site.

FTP
File Transfer Protocol - allows you to make changes on your website 24hrs a day.

Email forwarding
Our servers can automatically forward all your emails from your existing email address (yourname@hotmail.com) on programs such as Outlook Express to yourname@yourdomain.co.uk.

Email Pop
If you do not already have an email address, we can set this up for you. We will store any incoming mail which you can check on programs like Outlook Express. All you need to do is set up your email program that you use so that it is checking our servers for any incoming mail.

Apache SSL (Secure Socket Layer)
This is used for making credit card payments on your website or host other types of sensitive information on line. When a page hosts sensitive information you may have noticed from before that a yellow padlock will appear at the bottom of the screen.

PHP and Perl/CGI
These are different programs used in scripting which enables you to put interactive icons on your website like shopping baskets.

Full Content Management System

This content management system allows you to use a word processor style editor to make changes to web pages - as well as the code editor.

 

Custom Error Messages

If a page is missing or if someone is not authorised to view your pages you can show a special page instead of the standard Apache or NT error messages.

 

Front page extensions

These allow you to use Front Page to support the upload of webpages using HTTP and to run several specific Front Page applications - like site search or forum.

 

Autoresponders

These send an automatic message back to a person who has just sent you an email.

 

Email Aliases

This allows you specify more than one recipient for an email address.

 

Overture keywords management

Overture provide "pay per click" search engine listings - ICO3 provide management of these listings.

 

Inktomi Search Submit

This is a one off submission to INKTOMI to ensure your site is quickly and effectively indexed by the INKTOMI search engine.
